Silly But Eye Catching!

It got you to open to this page…. Thank you!

Service is so important…

Service work is one of the eight tools of ABA, and is one of the most powerful. Giving away what we have received is the surest way to keep it; no matter what stage of recovery we have reached (ABA p. 135). Doing service will help us maintain our own recovery!

You may be thinking, “But I’m so new – what can I possibly do? What service can I possibly give? I don’t ‘know’ enough yet to really help anyone!” Actually, there are many ways everyone in the fellowship can give service, regardless of their length of sobriety or level of recovery. You can:

  • Make a phone call to a fellow member in recovery. Discuss your experience with sobriety/recovery. If you are reading this page, you have an experience to share!
  • Request the Monday Night ABA Member Phone List. Call into the meeting to request one or clicking here will allow you to email the webmaster for an up to date phone list copy.
  • Attend a meeting. If you cannot attend an in-person meeting, attend a phone meeting. A meeting can only occur if at least two people are willing to show up and make the meeting happen. Click here for the ABA Phone Meeting Number instruction printable note card.
  • Lead one of the Monday Night or Friday Morning ABA phone meetings. The only requirement for leading the ABA phone meeting is the ability to read. The leader simply reads a pre-written script, and keeps an eye on the clock to ensure the meeting starts and ends on time. Easy! If you are attending the meeting anyway, please consider doing this very important service. Leave a message below in the comments area to sign-up for leading the phone meeting. Click here to access the phone meeting script.
  • Sponsor a fellow member. Share your experience, strength, and hope. Demonstrate compassion for and honesty towards our brother & sister anorexics/bulimics. Guide a fellow member through the Twelve Steps.
  • Talk to newcomers, as well as people who may benefit from our fellowship but who are not yet active members.
  • Use the tool of writing. Do you enjoy writing? Do service writing. Write on behalf of the fellowship.Write an article for ABA or for this our phone meeting blog, submit a piece of your recovery journaling to be placed on this blog, write a postcard to a fellow member during your travels or just as an unexpected pick-me-up; share your experience, strength, and hope in words on a page.
  • Give a small financial contribution to the fellowship, as you are able.
  • Pray on behalf of other members, for other people in the world at large, and for our Fellowship.

Need more reasons to do service? Check these out:

  • By making ourselves available to other members, we receive a far greater gift than we could have possibly given (ABA p. 153).
  • Service work will keep us sober when everything else fails (ABA p.164).
  • Service work helps us feel truly happy (ABA p. 164).
  • Give service for four reasons as seen in the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous: “1. Sense of duty. 2. It is a pleasure. 3. Because in so doing I am paying my debt to the man who took time to pass it on to me. 4. Because every time I do it I take out a little more insurance for myself against a possible slip.” (BB p. 175)
  • Finally: “When we move a finger for ten seconds in support of our group, we receive an avalanche of grace.” (ABA p. 174)

So please, consider doing service. Pray about it with your Higher Power, talk about it with your sponsor, and do what you can when you can – no one stays sober in isolation. We all need the support of others walking the same path (ABA p. 152). If you will not do it for yourself, please do it for me – We need you!
